Yan is from a family of soldiers, and out of all of them, Yan is not a fan of fighting and would rather run and hide from a fight. This has made him an embarassment to the family and is constantly picked on by his family. While Yan hates any form of violence, he wishes to do somehting to make his family proud of him and doesn't want to be an embarrasment. His father, tired of his son being a weakling forces him to train and learn to fight against his will, much to Yan's horror. He went through loads of military training and while it improved some of his skills he hated every last bit of it. Afterwards his father enrolled him into Beacon Academy to further his training and to make him into a Hunter. Yan believes he is hated by his family and has thoughts of joining the White Fang to make himself stronger and make his family stop mocking him, though this may not be the best idea in the world.

Yan is shy and comes off as a pacifist. He would rather people be happy and be friends, and will often run from a fight whenever possible, but is a capable fighter when needed. Yan is very quiet and doesn't always like to talk and at times hides his face behind something, this has resulted in him being bullied and harrassed by others. Even though he is a pacifist, he wants to be strong so people can stop picking on him and be viewed as strong and not hopeless, he looks up to his teammate Sean, who often gets him out of sticky situations. He likes his new teammates, even though Heather scares him, he views them as family, and will come to their aid when needed, and sees them as great allies who will help him over come his flaws. He views Sean as a big brother and often comes to him in times of need, this later turns into more of a father-son relationship and Yan views Alisa like a big sister. He later decides that even though he is scared of fighting, he must do so in order to survive and protect those he cares about. Yan also has a large temper, when provoked he can be a bit of a loose cannon and at times will channel that anger on the monsters he fights.

Yan wields the Ungift and Arrow spear. The Arrow spear are 2 arrow heads that can form into a spear meant for close range combat, Yan hates using this weapon because he doesn't like getting close to enemies out of fear of being harmed. This weapon can also be broken apart and used as projectiles, which are rarely used.

The Ungift appears in the form of a pocket watch that Yan carries around a lot as a form of security, but in battle it actually is concussion gun that Yan is very skilled with. When fired it's ammunition comes in the form of numbers.
